Groot Krakadouw – Amended Route

GROOT KRAKADOUW TRAIL – MAXIMUM GROUP 10 PERSONS

Day 1. Arrive in Clanwilliam by 5pm where you will be met by a Cederberg Heritage Route Representative. She will show you to your guest house in Clanwilliam for an overnight stay on a DBB basis.

Day 2.You will first be taken to park your car at the Cedarberg Travel office on a farm outside the town. From there you are taken straight to the start of the trail in the beautiful Jan Dissels River valley. You then enjoy an escorted hike of about 12km and 7-8hr up the beautiful Krakadouw Pass trail with wonderful views, through the heart of the Wilderness Area, to Krakadouw Neck and then down to a guest cottage in the Moravian village of Heuningvlei (about 900m up and then 300m down, Rating 3B). Overnight in the guest cottage in Heuningvlei on a DBB basis.

Day 3. Escorted day hike of about 16km and 7-8hr from Heuningvlei via the Boontjieskloof Hut, in the heart of the Wilderness Area, and then down to Grasvlei and Brugkraal (climb about 300m and descend 250m, Rating 3B). Overnight in the guest cottage at Brugkraal on a DBB basis.

Day 4.After breakfast you take an easy 8km escorted walk, on a donkey cart track via Witwater, to Heuningvlei (rating 1A) From there, at about 11h00, you will take the Donkey Cart Trail to the top of the Pakhuis Pass (about 12km, 2hr by donkey cart or 3 hours walking with some 300m uphill and 250m downhill, rating 2A. The track is quite rough and the donkey cart is not a very comfortable vehicle, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.) NOTE ALSO that the donkey cart track is subject to serious erosion during heavy rain storms, so it may not be suitable for donkey carts to carry passengers. Please check when making a booking. You are transferred from the top of the Pakhuis Pass back to where your cars are parked, arriving by about 15h00. Overnight in a guesthouse in Clanwilliam (optional) on a DBB basis.

Day 5.Depart for home. (If you elect to omit the fourth night you depart for home by 15h30 on Day 4.)

Escorted day hike from Heuningvlei. Either climb the spectacular Krakadouw Peak (a strenuous 8hr hike of about 12km in total, climbing 900m and then descending again, (Rating 4C) or do a circular, relatively easy, scenic day hike of 10-12km in the hills to the east of Heuningvlei to a lovely pool for swimming (Rating 2B).
