Great day hikes, great photo opportunities, great chat, great memories

For those with less time, there are day hikes on Table Mountain and in the Cape Point Nature Reserve, as well as walking-tours in the Cape Winelands.

Based in Cape Town, in the Western Cape, we operate within the Table Mountain National Park – stretching from the city centre to Cape Point, 60 km away – as well as in the Cape Winelands, Garden Route, Overberg and West Coast. We also partner with trails on the Wild Coast, in the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg and other parts of South Africa. But wherever we take you, it’ll be in true Slackpacker SA style.

Traditional South African hospitality, exquisite natural scenery and healthy physical activity all rolled into one

Slackpacker SA can also take care of the tour arrangements for your entire visit – your itinerary, accommodation, airport shuttles, visits to interesting venues and attractions, wine tours and other outdoor activities. You could join one of our pre-arranged tours, or we could create a private itinerary just for you.

Whether you join us as individuals, couples or groups, for a special event or as a team-building group for a corporate event, rather focus on the serious business of having a good time – and let us take care of the rest.

HOW TO USE THIS SITE

The purpose of the site is to promote hiking trails that offer hikers the opportunity to hike without a heavy backpack – referred to in South Africa as Slackpacking. The featured trails are listed on the MULTI-DAY TRAILS page – each with its own page that provides detailed information in a table format.

Each trail listed under Multi-Day Trails, has a DEDICATED page and its own contact form which gives the user the opportunity to make an enquiry directly to the trail operator.

The location of each trail is featured on the map at the foot of the page and the calendar will show trail dates that the operator is promoting. Not all organised trail dates are featured on the calendar.

If you want to research any of the featured trails:

  • Go to the HIKING TRAILS page and follow the link to Multi-Day Trails, scroll down to the page to the trail that interests you or scroll down to the map of South Africa at the foot of the page to check the location.
  • By clicking the trail picture or the icon on the map, the trail page will open, with details featured.
  • By scrolling down to the enquiry form at the foot of the page and completing the required details, a message will go directly to the trail operator, with a copy to Slackpacker SA The operator should respond within 48 hours, with detailed information requested.
  • Where a trail is featured on the calendar, clicking on the trail name will link to the Trail Page, whereas clicking on the picture will provide more information, usually a detailed itinerary.
  • Enquiries made from the Home Page will only be received by Slackpacker SA admin. Information on the trail requested should then be included in the message.

While we endeavour to keep information up to date, the web site is not in real time and updates have to be made. Prices, itineraries, accommodation type may change from time to time and should be confirmed by the operator. Prices in particular may be subject to change.

Alikreukel Trail review by Julia

Sept 2022
The highlights of my trail in a nutshell (or should I say Alikreukel shell!):The guides were informative, well-organised and lots  of fun; the accommodation and catering were both great;  my group was fabulous; the  scenery was stunning and varied, the history, geology and archeology of the area is enthralling and the kayaking, olive farm outing and gin tasting (which was an optional extra) were most enjoyable. A memorable hike!

May 2016: Dear Frank – We are very for the wonderful days, the good cooking and the good care you took of us. We appreciate the many good talks and laughters. We wish you many happy healthy and long hikes. Many greetings from 2 Belgian penguins. Siska & Rudi

The perfect day up Table Mountain

We did a day hike up table mountain with Frank, starting in Kirstenbosch gardens.

We are used to hike by ourselves in Europe but we’re recommended a guide here, which I can only agree to.

The Cape region has an amazing flora and a lot of history, Frank is highly knowledgeable in those areas and we had a great time talking and learning while enjoying the beautiful views that table mountain offers. It’s obvious that he has been doing this for a long time since we just felt relaxed and at home throughout the hike.

He had packed us snacks for lunch, which you might want to add a sandwich to if you’re hungry. Though we were fine with the provided meal.

All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 5/5.
